10 Things You Should Know

 

 

 

DON'T refer to resident of Scotland as British or English, even though Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, they will take offense. Refer to someone from Scotland as Scottish, or Scot. 

 

DO bring a gift for the host or hostess when you are a guest in their home. Greet them first then hand them your gift. Wine, flowers, or chocolates are common gifts.

 

When at the table DON'T place your hands beneith the table, even if your hands are empty. This can be seen as a sign of deception. But also don't rest your elbows on the table.

 

For women DO extend your hand first when greeting a man. 

 

Men DON'T wear a hat indoors. It is impolite for a man to wear his hat indoors, this includes Churches and restaurants. 

 

If someone buys you a drink in a bar or pub, DO remember to return the favor and buy them a drink. 

 

Kilts are worn by men for special occasions (black tie, weddings ect.) DON'T make jokes about it, or ask what he wears under his kilt. And DON'T call the kilt a skirt.

 

DO shake hands with everyone present, men, women, and children at social or business meetings. Shake hands again when leaving.

 

When out in public DON'T stare at people around you, this is considered rude.

 

DO drive on the left side of the road.
