Marriage

The legal marrying age in Scotland is 16. In Scot's law it is not the place of the marriage that legitimises it, but the qualifications of the person who is licensed to officiate.

Traditional weddings take place on Friday or Saturday, with the groom in formal attire often times wearing a kilt. The bride usually wears white. The wedding usually takes place near the bride's home, and either her father or senior male relative gives her away.

In traditional marriages divorce is allowed on the basis on adultery, intolerable behavior, desertion, and de facto separation.

In February 2014 the Scottish Parliament passed the bill allowing same sex marriage. The Scottish government believes that there is no place in Scotland for prejudice or discrimination, and that everyone deserves to be treated fairly.

                             Dating

There are no specific rules on dating in Scotland. It would all depend on what religion the people involved belonged to, and the rules set up within that religion.

Family Life

The Scottish clan system has been in place for many many years. Originally clans were presided over by a clan chief and each clan has its own unique tartan and coat of arms or heraldry. The clans were identified by the geological area they originated from. The clan's Chief owned large pieces of land that,  that usually included a castle.

In the past the women were seen as the caretakers of the home and children. But that has changed now, especially with the Scottish government supporting gender equality.

Scottish people are known as being warm, welcoming friendly people, with a welcoming hospitality. They love to make people feel at home.

Over 50 million people in the world claim Scottish ancestry.
